What is low vision?
Low Vision is a vision condition where people have lost part or parts of their vision and need help with special devices to use the vision that they do have to improve the quality of their lives.
What are low vision services?
An in-depth evaluation of a patient’s loss of sight and available vision in relationship to her goals for completing tasks in life. Appropriate magnification, devices and tints are used to determine which treatment options will allow the patient to regain her life.
Why are your low vision services better?
We have a unique way of prescribing more practical and easy to use vision devices. They are “hands-free” and create more freedom and independence.
What does it take to be successful as a low vision patient?
It is important to understand that many low vision patients have lost hope because they have been told “nothing else can be done” to help them.
The key to being successful with low vision care is to have a desire to improve their current condition and be willing to accept help.
Will I be able to drive with my low vision devices?
Low vision devices typically allow one to pass all vision regulations required for driving.
Depending on your available vision and response to the proper low vision device you will be able to drive with special training. The only limiting factors for driving include: 1) reaction time, related to physical limitations 2) confidence and 3) family input.
To determine if this is an option for you, the first step is to schedule an appointment with Dr. Jacobi.
Will I be able to read with my new devices?
Yes. However, you still may have to use large print materials. Most of my patients use electronic tablets so that they control the print size.
What do I need to bring to my low vision appointment?
You will need to bring your current eyeglasses (if you have any) and any low vision devices that you are using.
Will I need more than one low vision device?
The more you hope to achieve, the more devices you may need. Typically, people who are more active often have more goals that require different devices.
What are the State of Michigan vision requirements for driving?
For full driving privileges, a patient needs at least 20/40 through a low vision device (such as telescopes that are worn like glasses) and full peripheral (side vision). For daylight only driving, a patient will need 20/50 and full side vision through a telescope. We are fortunate that Michigan allows people with low vision to drive when they meet their requirements.
Does insurance cover the cost of the devices?
For whatever reason these devices are not covered by insurance.
