Low Vision Appointment

Dr. Jacobi,
I understand that a low vision appointment is needed when you have reduced vision that doesn’t respond to the typical glasses and contacts.  I am having trouble driving, and reading my Bible, so I have scheduled an appointment with a low vision doctor.  How do I prepare for my appointment?

That is one question I love to hear! The first and foremost requirement for a successful low vision visit is an idea of what you wish to accomplish visually.  For instance, you may want to be able to drive and drive with more confidence.  You may simply want to watch television instead of just listening to it.  You may want be able to read again.

Whatever the task(s), be clear about what it is that is visually missing in your life.  The key is to be specific.  When I ask, "How may I help you?" the response I frequently hear is, "I want to see better."  My next question is, "See better doing what?"  I need to prescribe devices to make sure we are able to fulfill the patient's wish list.

There are many different devices designed to help people accomplish the wide variety of activities of daily living so it is important to be specific about your needs.  For instance, Roy J., a vibrant 70 year-old man, wanted to watch his grandchildren play soccer and to be able to drive to the games himself.  He also wanted to be able to paint ceramics.  In response, I was able to provide him two different devices that allowed him to enjoy the quality of his life!

Other than the wish list, it is recommended that you bring:

  • the size print you (realistically) want to read

  • any magnifiers you currently use

  • your current eyeglasses

  • any vitamins that you are taking

  • "meaningful measurements"-the distance to the computer, hobbies, music, the canvas etc.

  • your sunglasses

It is also extremely important that you also have a family member or a dear friend join you for the appointment. With all of these wishes and items on your list, I assure you that I can help you improve the quality of your life.
