Hands-Free Devices

By the time I see low vision patients for an exam, most patients have been struggling with hand-held magnifiers.  Many times, they have a variety of them with different powers for various tasks.  But they ultimately become frustrated and seek out more practical options.

I specialize in hands-free spectacle mounted devices such as telescopes and high-power reading glasses.  Here is why hands-free makes more sense:

1)       Unlike hand-held devices, telescopes improve mobility.

2)      Reading with spectacle mounted magnification allows you to see more of your reading material

3)      Continuing to or returning to driving becomes a possibility.

4)      Seeing faces of loved ones and friends is a reality.

5)      Hobbies such as painting and woodworking can be performed at proper distances.

6)      Watching television without sitting unreasonably close is freeing.

7)      Your hands are freed up for writing.

With hands-free devices no more:

1)       Isolation due to not being able to drive.

2)      Having others read your mail to you.

3)      Giving up social gatherings due to not being able to recognize faces.

4)      Having to only listen to audio books.

5)      Giving up playing cards.

6)      Abandoning home repairs.

7)      Cutting out using your computer.

The freedom of hand-held devices has been liberating to thousands of my patients.  With the right set of devices and the proper instruction, you too may enjoy your vision once again.  I always tell patients that low vision care is an on-going conversation.  Through this on-going relationship, the patient will meet all of her goals.
